MANILA, Philippines – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) reminds health care providers and patients that the safety and effectiveness of robotic surgery “has not been established for use in mastectomy procedures or the prevention or treatment of cancer” specifically breast and cervical cancers.
On its website, the U.S. agency also encourages patients and health care providers who use robotically-assisted surgical procedures to consider the benefits, risks and possible alternatives for the procedure.
The agency said patients should be aware also of their health care providers’ specialized training, practice, experience and patient outcomes before proceeding with robotically-assisted surgery.
The USFDA encourages a patient who had robot-assisted surgical procedure, to file a report through MedWatch, the FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting program, if they experience complications after the surgery.
