UNTV Cup Season 6 champion Senate Defenders and the Armed Forces of the Philippines kept their share of the Group-A lead after defeating their respective opponents in the seventh edition of the UNTV Cup at the Pasig City Sports Center on Sunday, October 14, 2018.
The Senate defeated the Department of Justice Boosters, 87-72 after blocking the latter’s fast transition offense plays to chop down their early edge in the ball game.
Jeffry Sanders lifted the Defenders with his 23-point finish, 20 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 blocks that earned him the best player of the game title.
“Half time, sinabi namin ‘We have to stop their transition offense.’ In doing that, we should be stopping the ball all the time,” Senate Defenders Coach Mike Fermin said.
(During the half time break, we said ‘We have to stop their transition offense.’ In doing that, we should be stopping the ball all the time.)
“Noong later part na, out of frustration na yung mga galaw eh… yun lang ibang players napu-frustrate na, doon kami nagkagulo, medyo nawala sa focus,” DOJ Assistant Coach Jessie Montivirgen said.
(At the later part of the game, our plays were out of frustrations… some of our players were frustrated then. That’s when our game broke down, we lost our focus.)
The AFP Cavaliers also scored their third straight win after clobbering the rookie PITC Global Traders, 78-68.
Jerry Lumongsod led the Cavaliers by bucketing 19 points, including five from the three-point area, 5 assists, four rebounds and steals and a block, earning him the best player of the game award.
“Medyo mataas yung morale ng team, since the start ng league… we will take one game at a time,” AFP Cavaliers Head Coach CPL Cornelio “Sonny” Manucat III.
(Team’s morale is quite high since the start of the league… we will take once game at a time.)
The PhilHealth Plus, meanwhile, gains their second victory after upsetting the Malacañang-PSC Kamao, 90-87.
Kenneth Emata’s buzzer-beater three-point shot served as the key to defeating the Malacañang-PSC after both teams scored 87-all in the last part of the game. His 9-point finish with Jonathan Aldave’s 36 points earned them the game’s best players title.
PhilHealth now holds 2-0 win loss record while this is Malacañang-PSC’s first loss of the season.
“Nagkulang kami sa Defense namin, ball rotation din namin kulang, so kailangan din namin I work out yun,” Malacañang-PSC Kamao Coach Raffy Gutierez said.
“As promised kahit kulang kami ng players, kahit maraming challenges, injury it will not stop us. Dahil dito po sa laro ng UNTV Cup, puso talaga ilalaban namin para sa beneficiaries namin at kami po ay nakikiisa sa magandang adhikain ni Bro. Eli at Kuya Daniel na gamitin namin ang aming talento sa basketball para manalo para sa aming chosen beneficiary,” PhilHealth Plus Head Coach Delio Aseron II said.
(As promised, even though we don’t have enough players, despite the challenges and injury, it will not stop us. Because in this game of UNTV Cup, we will fight with our hearts for our beneficiaries. We are one with the noble advocacy of Bro. Eli Soriano and Brother Daniel Razon of using our talent in basketball to help our chosen beneficiaries.) — BERNARD DADIS / UNTV News & Rescue
